Carla Madrid | Graduate Student
Carla received her B.S. in Biochemistry at Texas Woman’s University in Denton where she graduated with honors. There, she investigated the enzyme restrictions site of cytomegalovirus complex M140 and M141 with Dr. Laura Hanson in the Biology department and Cisplatin stability using Raman Spectroscopy with Dr. Nasrin Mirsaleh-Kohan in the Chemistry department. She taught introduction to chemistry, was involved in the SUCCESS mentoring program for first generation students and was a public relations officer for the Kappa Epsilon Mu Club for science outreach in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Carla then joined Dr. Sheena Darcy’s group at the University of Texas at Dallas where she studied protein-protein interactions between histones and histone acetyltransferases using mass spectrometry. She was an active member of the Chemistry Graduate Student Association and was recognized for her involvement in National Engineer’s week “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day”. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Carla was a Research Associate in Dr. Kendra Frederick’s group from April 2017 to August 2019. She joined as a graduate student in January 2020 and is focusing on aggregation-prone intrinsically disordered proteins involved in neurodegenerative diseases.
